What is an Evaluation?
A speech and language evaluation measures a child's communication skills to determine if a speech-language delay or disorder is present.
Initial ConsultationBefore testing, we will meet with you to learn more about your child. This initial consultation may be done in person or over the phone, and may also include a completion of a written form. We will also answer any of your questions and provide you with education about any issues or concern you have and the assessment process. You may be asked about your child's health history, developmental history, speech and language behaviors, school history, and prior speech treatment. We will then use this information to determine an appropriate scope for the evaluation.
TestingDuring the evaluation, we observe your child doing different tasks designed to find out your child's strengths and weaknesses in communication. Testing may include a number of standardized tests, observations, developmental checklists, and a collection of a speech and language sample. Depending on the child's age and attention span, an evaluation may be completed in one session. More comprehensive evaluations, however, may require several sessions to obtain enough information to make a diagnosis.
Post-Testing/RecommendationsAt the end of the evaluation we will meet with you to briefly discuss our findings and next steps. You will then receive a formal written report with detailed information about our findings. This report will include: (1) information about your child's history; (2) a description of your child's abilities in the areas of making speech sounds, language use, and fluency of speech; (3) a description of any special problems or concerns, such as a short attention span or behavioral problems; and (4) recommendations for further action.
We will also include specific goals that allow you and your child to measure and achieve meaningful and functional gains. |
What is Speech-Language Therapy?
Speech-language therapy focuses on helping people become more independent with their ability to communicate with others. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs), often informally known as speech therapists, are professionals educated in the study of human communication, its development, and its disorders.
For younger children, early diagnosis and treatment is essential to eliminating or minimizing future challenges in school, peer interactions, and day-to-day routines. Speech treatment will vary depending on the severity and type of diagnosis.
